"The lesson in moderation Thidwick teaches us"

Today, actor Freddie Prinze Jr. reviews "Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose.")


Dr. Seuss books provide us not only with vivid, imaginative worlds in which anything can, and usually does, happen, but with lessons, reminding us of the obstacles we may face in life and ways in which to handle them. Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose carries on this tradition by sharing a story that relays a simple, yet important message _ be giving to others, but beware of those people, or creatures, who will try to take advantage of your kindness.

Thidwick's troubles begin when he grants a Bingle Bug's wish to hitch a ride on Thidwick's massive antlers. Upon seeing the comfortable spot the Bingle Bug has found for himself, other animals begin to take up residence on Thidwick's antlers. Thidwick's generosity is tested by these uninvited guests, but, striving to be a gracious host, he never turns a single creature away _ not even "a swarm of three hundred and sixty-two bees!"

Although quite pleasant for the inhabitants of Thidwick's antlers, the situation proves to be anything but ideal for Thidwick himself. Luckily for this kind moose, his antlers fell off, along with his guests, so new ones could grow. This tale serves as a reminder to all readers that while we should always try to help others, we must always remember to be kind to ourselves as well.
